Riverside Garden Design in Lewes
This garden in Lewes was a blank canvas laid completely to lawn with one single tree. The design brief was to create a family space, with different levels, a route and access to the river for the kayak. Planting was to be soft and natural. A growing space and steps over the flood wall were also required.
The design approach was for a high impact garden using minimal hard landscape, of which all were permeable, and in the rare chance of flood were easy to top up. Oak was used as a soft material suited to the environ. To create some isolation and semi secret spaces in the garden, tall Calamagrostis grasses were used to create a screen. Planting was colourful and naturalistic to encourage pollinators.
Just planted up, the simple structure of this small family garden is apparent, with paths weaving from lawn to lawn throughout this mainly soft landscaped rear garden.
The colourful planting scheme compliments the family garden, making the space attractive and fun for the children.
Borrowing from the landscape with carefully selected plants
A small vegetable growing space was created using chunky oak so the children could experiment growing fruit and vegetables for the table.
Just planted up, the young plants are already flourishing and encouraging insects.
