Project: Grade 2 Listed Country Cottage Garden Design

Style: Classic, curated, refined

Our clients had recently acquired a beautiful 17th century grade 2 listed country cottage with a larger more modern extension. The client was already working with an architect, historic buildings consultant and a planning consultant to extend and renovate their home and we were delighted to be invited to join their fantastic existing team. Our main brief was to:

  • ensure that the landscape design responded sensitively and within the paremeters of planning, in particularly with the area that related to the original 17th century cottage.

  • transform the client’s existing garden into one that would connect beautifully with their developing home.

  • develop defined areas for gardening, growing, pottering, family gatherings, entertaining and chilling.

  • develop a design that is proportional to the scale of the house, it’s doors and windows, but is also connected to the layout of the house so that it feels intuitive, and both the house and garden feel harmonised.

The focus of this design was to create rooms outside, allowing the client to whilst away many wonderful hours pottering within the garden, and to spend restful and relaxing hours with friends and family, be that over a long Sunday lunch gathering on the entertaining terrace, sipping a cool evening drink on the sitting terrace, or watching the grandchildren splash around in the pool. Water features nestled into planted borders and located in smaller terraces add light and sound to the overall experience.

We’ve also created a simple but beautiful growing area for cut flowers and growing vegetables with an Alitex greenhouse becoming a focal part of the swimming pool terrace.

Informal family arrival and the pedestrian entrance off the road create a relaxed feeling as you enter the property, while the more formal guest arrival with hedges and formal paths forms a more refined experience.

We also designed the orchard as a grid with interspersed topiary, a nod to the magnificent Great Dixter for our client who loves topiary with a passion. The orchard pathway leads to a stunning garden office, creating a lovely journey to work.

The location of the house allowed us to borrow from the wider landscape with blurred boundaries and magnificent trees drawing the eye into the far distance.

We are really excited to now be working towards the construction phase of this garden and will update as things progress.
