Client: Professional couple with small children

Project: Family Back Garden with Naturalistic Planting

Style: Natural, Functional, Wildlife

The original garden was mainly laid to lawn, with an old shed. The children played on the lawn but they wanted more from the space. They wanted to have apace to escape to as a family and hang out within, and to be able to entertain friends and family Most significantly the garden flooded annually, making the garden inaccessible.

We designed a family garden to attenuate the winter flooding while also providing habitat for wildlife. A rain garden, with plants that tolerate winter wet and summer dry were planted in the depression, with the deck allowing access over the flooded ground, but also forming an immersive seating for the family to experience the invertebrate activity in the summer months. Larval food sources, pollinating plants, winter stems, niches and substrates support the local wildlife and engage the children.

We have received some wonderful feedback from our clients who have found the garden has become a retreat and escape from the bustle of daily life and provides a much appreciate moment of respite.
